TLDR:
Russ Dewbury's Jazz Rooms...
Myself and some of my close friends have a long standing history with Russ Dewbury's truly legendary 'Jazz Room's nights, which ran through the 80's, 90's, 00's and beyond!, hosted on Staurday's in the super cool basement club 'Jazz Place' on Ship Street, Brighton.
With ceilings low enough to touch, a crisp Bose sound system, and an unparalleled vibe, Jazz Rooms nights were a truly 'sweat dripping from the ceiling' affair, with Russ often accompanied by a live percussionist jamming all night long, or on occasion, playing host to some very special guests including Rainer Turby, Jazzanova, Gilles Peterson, Nicola Conte, Pete Herbert, Patrick Forge and many others. I personally recall being wowed by Koyoto Jazz Massive in there on one occasion!. Other times would simply see the main man himself stewarding the entire night solo, playing endless unapologetic afro beat / latin / jazz / funk and everything in-between.
Russ Dewbury was then (and is even more so today) a seasoned master of his craft, with the enviable knack of weaving together seamless set lists that are beautifully diverse yet highly complimentary through out, meaning that along side the organic African rhythms / Jazz / Funk / Latin etc, the eb-and-flow of the night would always turn up some incredible electronic crossover offerings, which appealed massively to my inner electronic side and peppered Russ's sets perfectly, subtly nodding towards his extensive musical knowledge that spanned the finest underground, percussive, tribal, deep house and even drum & bass genres.
The music policy was something of a musical education for all who attended, and I am proud to say that my self and my cohorts lapped up a wealth of inspiring world music from beyond the reaches of the more typical 4/4 house and techno that was my main stay as a DJ at the time.
Jazz Rooms nights massively influenced my open minded approach to listening to a broad spectrum of music both then and now, leading me to discover tracks such as Max Sedgly's 'Happy,' MAW's 'Brazillian Beat', Dumagick 'Easy Boom' alongside formidable oldskool jams like Soul Makossa's 'Manu Dibango' , Oneness Of Juju - River Luv Rite, Buari - Karam Bani as a direct consequence of pestering Russ in the DJ booth through out many of those nights.
Fast forward some 15+ years and he's still at it now!... better than ever by all accounts, steadfast in his quest to teach the world about raw, underground, Nu Yorican Funk / Disco / Afro Latin grooves every other month on the south coast and through is 'Healing Force' radio show... so if your looking for some high calibre solid grooves, check out the Soulful Strut movement and we'll see you on the dancefloor...
