// DJ Blush. . Talk to me. . .
Fancy a night out? . . I tell you what, you may as well make it the whole weekend eh? Not sure that box of Pro Plus is gonna cut it though. . . DJ Blush aka 'The First Lady Of House' a true dedicated ambassador of the deep and tech house movement. Just keeping up with Blush is a feat in itself and as for the Houdini act she pulls spending as much time during her live sets in the crowd shaking her hot little booty as in the DJ booth, will wonders ever cease?
. . . Some say, she breathes not oxygen but 125bpm 4/4 beats, others say, the only food she consumes are original Strictly Rhythm vinyl pressings. . all we know is, she's called DJ Blush. . .
OK, so lets kick off with a tune. . . name drop one of your favourite tracks right now? 1. One of my favourite tunes at the moment has to be 'It's You Again' - Lee Foss Meets Robert James In The Art Department Remix, am loving Lee Foss right now...
In your opinion, whats been the best promotion you DJ’d or just plain partied your ass off at in the last year? Oooh thats a toughy cos' I do like to party and I have played at some amazing ones over the last year or so. I recently did a bit of a three day martahon party session which included Claude Von Stroke and Julio Bashmore at The Basement in Hoxton for part of his Big Bottom Tour on the Thursday then Friday Maceo Plex and Jozif at The Red Gallery for Slowpoke... outstanding music at both nights and was loving both the venues they got a real old skool warehouse vibe feel which takes me back. We ended up back at the basement in Hoxton on the Saturday for a a party called Good Vibe. I am really loving the basement and warehouse style parties which are making a welcome return to London especially... Some of my favourite parties I have played at recently include ALTA at Riki Tiks in Brighton where I am now playing a monthly residency, music policy is strictly underground deep and tech house all night, great venue and an awesome crowd. I am also a bit of a regular down at Egg Club in London and play for a few differant promotions down there... keep an eye out for All Friends, Blow and Bodymove at Egg Club, all great parties!
It is widely accepted in club land that your guilty of partying harder than the crowd (and we know this from experience) and can often be found finishing up one party to move straight on to the next and the next. . how do you do it, are you Bionic? Ha ha ha ha I don't know what you mean........ it's a rumour completely unfounded... ok ok I cannot tell a lie, its true I do like to party and I am a proper groover... Its all about pacing yourself ( I will teach you boys eventually what that means... ha ha ha Mick Hennessy) and of course having a contsant source of vodka Redbull when out partying. I was a hyperactive child (so my mum tells me) so I think I still have alot of that in me. I was a dancer as a child and taught dancing til' about the age of 20 when DJing kinda took up most of my life... I don't do sitting down very well and I get bored quite easily. So I guess I am well trained in the art of partying, the secret is never peak too soon and know your limits.
If we could take care of all your commitments and gave you unlimited funds, what would you do this weekend? This weekend.... well its June so i guess Ibiza and a few other destinations are outta the question.. Maybe a weekend of partying in Berlin would be nice... havent made it out to Berlin and thats a party destination I intend to tick off my list this year. Some great DJ's, clubs and the general vibe out there is supposed to be amazing... obviously as I have gone to Europe which is quite cheap I shall be spending the rest of the money on taking my best mates with me to an amazing hotel (To get changed in... not sleep) I can do that when I get back to London. A tour of the finest bars, clubs and after parties that berlin has to offer.
Whats all this noise we keep hearing on your 'Saturday Shakedown' Push FM show concerning a weekly Deep House shindig at Riki Tik Brighton? The Saturday Shakedown is my radio show which i have on www.pushfm.com and have recently just moved my showtime to a little later in the day so you can catch it 6pm - 8pm GMT every Saturday!!! Been doing a show on Push Fm since the station lauched and prior to that I played on House Fm and several other pirate radio stations. It's an anything goes kinda show as the Sound Canvas Music boys can confirm as I believe anything went when we did our four hour special on push fm... ha ha ha I wont say anymore!!! I have a guest on the show most weeks and try to give my listeners the best in ALL things house, thats what I love about radio its a time where you can play just what you want! If you havent checked out my show make sure you do and pop in the live chatroom and I may even give you a mention. There is also the On Demand section on the Push Fm site so if you do miss any shows just go there and you can hear my show anytime of the day. Yes in recent weeks there has been alot of talk about ALTA at Riki Tik in Brighton... it's a strictly deep / tech house night that has just launched at this great little venue on Bond Street in Brighton. If you are in Brighton on a Saturday I recommend you check it out, expect great DJ's down there, residents are Will Sumsuch, Danny Williams and Jeff Daniels and great guests like Harold Heath, Matt Masters and of course myself ha ha ha ha. I have been lucky enough to get an invite once a month down there and am loving it. This party is one to watch out for with a great vibe and outstanding underground music plus the staff at Riki Tik are second to none.
The earth is about to explode (could happen), you just about have time to retrieve 3 pieces of prized vinyl and make a sandwich/Baguette to take with you in your emergency evacuation vessel. what records would they be and whats in your sarnie? Oh I hate these sort of questions cos' I can never make up my mind on what I would save....and it changes from one week to the next. This week I would save... My House Hits 1988 Album 12 inch mixes. (This was my dads album and can remember him busting it out every Saturday morning while he was danicing round the house still in his clothes from the night before) and I wonder where I get it from?!? There are some wicked original house tracks on there like Farley Jackmaster Funk 'Love Can't Turn Around, Put That Record Back On and Lets Get Busy'. Next let's go for a bit of hip-hop and my original vinyl of Dougie Fresh and the Get Fresh Crew with tracks on it including 'The Show On and La Di Da Di Da'. Finally I'm gonna pick 'Alright' by Urban Soul, total feel good tune and another oldie which me and my mates do love to have a good old sing-song too.
Who is your favourite DJ/producer at the moment and why? There are so many............. ok will give it a go....Always have loved Jimpster as a DJ and producer, always make sure I catch his DJ sets when I can and pretty much love all his mixes and the stuff on his Freerange label, plus he put's up with me hasseling him for the names of tracks after he has played. Proper nice guy and he know's how to rock a party. Also gotta big up Jozif who is another amazing producer and DJ, check out his Fist and Finger label and his residency at WE LOVE at space this year. Him playing is a great excuse for me to head to Ibiza a few times this summer. Also loving Lee Foss, Maceo Plex and Subb An.
We hear whisperings that you are working with some well established deep/tech house artists on your own production efforts? discuss. . . Well, over the next few months I'm gonna be playing alot in London at various parties around town then of course there are my monthly residencies at Riki Tik in Brighton for Alta and my little monthly Thursday night party at the Lizard Lounge. Also got some dates in Italy, Croatia and Ibiza lined up and may possibly be going to Russia. I shall also be doing more of my BUMPY RIDERS parties, we had a great lauch party at Pacha on the 1st of May, all the DJ's played outstanding sets and there was a wicked vibe from start to finish, gotta say a big thanks to all involved and expect plenty more BUMPY RIDERS parties over the summer. Also I am currently worrking on a couple of tracks with some well known producrs (and no I ain't giving away who) so hoping to have them finished very soon look out for tracks from RIDERS very soon. I shall be also spending some time in Ibiza partying... well when ur best mate is resident for We Love it would be rude not too.
What is your guilty pleasure? Latex...
What two critical pieces of advice would you pass on to like minded aspiring DJ's? When you play out have one foot on the dancefloor and one in the dj booth (not literally of course). I always think from a clubbers view as well as being a DJ, what would I wanna hear now, what would make my arse shake if I was them. I think you get my drift. Always keep an eye on the crowd, you can normally start to judge which way to go with your set and whats working when you keep a little eye on the crowds reactions. Be nice, I think the reason I have lasted so long is that I'm pretty straight talking, friendly and hardworking when I play out. Promoters, clubbers and fellows DJ's remember that and help you out. You don't last years in this business acting like a w***ker.
She even found some time to knock up one Doozy of a mix for us. . . chhhhheck this,
