// Julien Chaptal - Apple Woodoo EP - 2020Vision //
Julien Chaptal returns to 2020Vision with a five track maxi EP. Julien is an integral part of the emergent Dutch house scene that took off there a few years back but his unique French roots give him an edge that stands out from the genre. Chaptal was heavily influenced by Nile Rogers and Bernard Edwards as he grew up in Paris. He found their tight production replicated by the emergent French explosion of 1997 when Daft Punk and friends took the world by storm and again found inspiration to make music. So it is a fitting tribute to these times that JC has produced the track 'Paris' on this EP. Full of the energy that was going down in clubs at that time we believe is a good moment to relive the vibes again now. VIS214 - Julien Chaptal - Apple Woodoo EP by 2020VisionRecordings
Moving to Amsterdam in 2000 Julien worked as sound engineer and picked up 'real' production skills from mixing live bands. He fell in with Dylan Hermelijn (aka 2000 and one) and his crew of Remote Area producers and started to make beats alongside Lauhaus, Shinedoe and Kabale und Liebe as the sound exploded there. Chaptal always stood out though and produced an album on Remote Area that still sounds totally fresh today. It was a cut from this album that ignited our interest at 2020Vision called 'Balkafono'. A firm favourite and back to basics and after hours clubs this odd metallic twister always pricked up ears. JC was excited about coming onto 2020 and produced a superb EP for us that included the rather special 'Collider'. On this EP we feel 'Sunshine' is the sound of his Dutch days. Julien's world changed in 2009 when he made a bona fide hit record called 'Mamdaye'. This was a monster throughout that summer and JC found himself touring the planet. The stand out cut for House heads on the new EP is without doubt 'Apple Woodoo'. Already played all summer at We Love Space Ibiza by Ralph Lawson this is a subtle, elegant piece that demands through attention to detail rather than all too familiar cheap drops and FX. It can be easily imagined in a Villalobos session and will strike a chord with DJs who love a touch of jazz in their productions. Julien showcases that his depth as an artist goes deep on this project and 'Sun Goes Down' provides a special warm glow as the sun literally goes down on another summer. The EP is completed with the no-nonsense jump up 'The Drunks Come Out' which sounds like an old Chicago jack track that would happily sit on Relief and get spanked by Cajmere. It is time to reconsider what you know about Julien Chaptal. The deeper you dig the more you find......
