// Exclusive interview with Goldfish //
This week we caught up with the multi-talented jazzy house wizards Goldfish as this round up their summer tour in the UK... For those who don’t know, when, where and why did the Goldfish movement start?
We started about 7 years ago as students in Cape Town. …it was kind of a reaction to being musicians who really loved dance music and electronica but also really loved Jazz. We were listening to Kruder and Dorfmeister, St Germain and Propellarheads and we thought: Why not make this stuff live? It just exploded from there. It’s a lot trickier when you’re making music on the tip of Africa in Cape Town to get your stuff out there. That and relentless touring. But the internet has made our lives a lot easier and things are just going nuts for us at the moment which we’re really happy about. Check out our latest music vid to see what can happen if people respond well to something on youtube – the sky is the limit
Summarise Goldfish in 5 words...
Made with love in Africa.
You boys are nearing the end of a pretty mental summer touring schedule. How tough is it being together for all of that time and has there ever been a danger of fisticuffs?
The schedule has been pretty mental….but I haven’t got any wresting match stories for you! We really don’t ever have that. We’re all pretty chilled and we’ve known each other for over 10 years . But there have been some run in’s with airline employees. This one lady I swear was possessed, haha!
Regarding productions and remixes, What have you got going on for the remainder of 2011 and into 2012?
We’re working on our new single and release of our album as well as a couple new live tracks we’ve been testing out. We’re currently filming a 3D video as well so it’s all go in fishland.
You guys have been producing quality music for a number of years now. Have your tools and methods changed over the years with regards to new software and hardware?
Thank you. Definitely. We’re always on the lookout for making our show and music making capabilities better and technology allows us to do that. When we started we were broke students humping around analogue mixers, massive old computers and keyboards just to make music…now you can do it all with an iPad and a Macbook pro if you want. That said, there is the saying: ‘All gear and no idea’ - you gotta have the music ideas too. There is a lot of crap music made with cool technology.
Where do you find the most inspiration whilst making music, on the road or in the studio?
Everywhere. Could be out surfing, or on the road, a new artist we’re listening to or just fiddling in the studio with a sample or a piece of gear.
Who's music are you really digging at the moment?
Love the new Friendly Fires, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, Trentemoller, Daspop, and William Shatner’s solo album is DEFINITELY worth a listen. Seriously.
Is there something you can tell SCM that no one else knows about you right now?
Dom’s allergic to chocolate. That’s annoying.
What have been your highlights so far this summer gig-wise?
Headlining Amsterdam’s Olympic Stadium with Booka Shade was pretty mental, as well as some amazing shows in Brazil at Green Valley(amazing outdoor club in the Jungle) and Pacha Ibiza and Blue Marlin Ibiza. Too many good memories this Summer. Now for summer in the southern hemisphere…good little scam we got going on!
