// Miguel Migs - Outside The Skyline (Om Records/Salted Music) //

miguel-migs-outside-the-skylineFollowing the success of ‘Colourful you’ and ‘Those Things’, Miguel Migs returns with the incredibly well crafted ‘Outside the Skyline’. Your journey starts with the seductive and soulful track ‘Tonight’ featuring Michelle Ndegeollo. The deep house flavour continues through ‘breakdown’ and then slaps you in face with ‘the system’. A song which is heavily influenced by Miguels love of reggae and finally ends with ‘Getaway’ featuring the smooth vocals of George Levin. This for me is one of the outstanding tracks on the album and a perfect way to end what is an eclectic selection of music that reminds us why Miguel Migs is still at the top of his game.

This album is not in our opinion his finest work to date but it does contain some beautiful tracks that will definitely sit perfectly amongst your most valued and treasured house music collection.

Migs has emerged from San Francisco’s deep house scene as an artist who transcends the stylistic limitations of genre in a way so very few have managed. In his own words, “I take inspiration from everything around me. Its not about trends or what’s fashionable, its about creative expression, quality, emotion and artistic integrity.”

Having released a clutch of highly acclaimed productions, including the well-received 2002 debut album ‘Colourful You’ on the legendary Astralwerks label, Migs’ latest effort, ‘Outside the Skyline’ is an intelligent, stunningly accomplished album that showcases not just a passion for quality, soulful melodies and intricate productions, but also a lush set of influences that stretch from early soul, dub and funk to house and Italo disco. This melting pot provides the backdrop to Miguel Migs’ 21st century take on house music.

Showcasing an extraordinary line up of creative and internationally renowned artists - Migs’ reputation is such that, when it came to recording ‘Outside The Skyline’, he was able to pull together come impressive collaborators including original disco diva Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King, reggae legends Capleton, Half-Pint and Freddie McGregor, first lady of musicianship Meshell Ndegeocello, Berlin based singer Georg Levin and bossa nova phenomenon Bebel Gilberto.

The result is an album that’s trademark Migs. Informed by house but no slave to metronomic dance floor rhythms and tempos. It takes influences from jazz, reggae, soul and more, with a heavy emphasis on high-quality song writing and equally high production values.
